Daniel Hidalgo takes his first FSC #1 plate

2017 Specialized Florida State Championship series #8 - Santos Trails - Ocala, Fl

Well the series finished on a cold crisp day as the first real cold snap of the season hit the central Florida area, temperatures were hovering just above freezing as the kids raced at 8:30am and it didn't get much warmer until most of the races were done for the day. The trails were in great shape as usual at this popular trail system, many thanks to the Ocala Mountain Bike Association for their efforts especially since hurricane Irma hit back in September. This years layout was a little milder than in the past due to heavy rains that were predicted for Friday night, so the trail known as "John Brown" was taken off the table as a measure of caution but was replaced with a longer course that included the new sections of the trail known as "sink hole", in all the riders were faced with a 7.2 mile off road challenge.

There were great race battles all day with a few championships won only by one point which included Caroyln Maddox taking the women's category 1 championship by one point over Alania Casioppo. In the men's elite class it went down to the wire between Bob McCarty (the defending champ) and Daniel Hidalgo with Daniel getting the nod and his first FSC #1 plate. Santos Bike Shop was again the round sponsor of the event and supplied thousands of dollars worth of prizes to the medalists. The bike shop also put on the Merry Cranksxmas 25 mile ride on Saturday to benifit St Judes Childerens Hospital, many thanks to the Santos Bike Shop crew! Jim Macpherson took home the Protano Law $50 holeshot award this week in the expert 50+ category.

Later that afternoon the Ocala Hilton was the site of the annual FSC awards banquet which was once again met with a packed house. Along with all of the champions and top five acknowledgements there were special awards given to the following...

Rider of the Year Male: Daniel Hidalgo

Rider of the Year Female: Caroyln Maddox

Most Improved Rider: Humberto Toledo

Most Improved Female: Alaina Casioppo

Most Improved Junior: Ethan Reyes

ESPO award (Sportsmanship): Carlos Galvis

Best Supporting Cast: Mosies Inoa

Legacy Award: Shelly Allen

Congrats to all and hope to see eveyone on the trails again soon!

Women Cat 1's celebrate at Amelia

2017 Coconut Cup South Florida Championship series #3 - Amelia Earheart Trails - Hialeah, Fl

The Coconut Cup series returned to South Florida for round three under a perfect Florida weekend, mild weather and sunny skies and the mid week rain just made the trails even more perfect. The trail system was hit hard by hurricane Irma and the Amelia Trail Crew was faced with an enormous job just to get enough of the trail opened in time for the race and they did so with a minimum of resourses, many, many thanks for their effort from the racing community! The trail used for the event turned out to be 6.2 miles in length and the fastest lap of the day was in the 22 minute range (that's a 16+ mph average for you mathheads), which is blazing fast considering all of the turns and obsticales.

Bob McCarty put on his race face and took the overall win on the day in men's elite class while Caroyln Maddox topped the females with her win, both riders have put in many a laps at Amelia and it showed. Erica Stehouwer took the $50 Protano Law holeshot award in the women's cat 1 class. Sun Cycling of Hialeah was the round sponsor providing thousands in gift certificates to the awardies, many thanks to them and to all of the fine series sponors. This event was a make up race for the FSC series which wraps up next weekend in Ocala and that race in return is a make up race for the Coconut Cup series, hope to see you all there!
